Optimal use of natural resources and valorisation of by-products

General objectives

In a circular economy, by-products are used to create new (food) products and there is almost no waste. Using recycled water is also a central theme. The use of biomass is subject to the cascade of value retention: first food/animal feed, then materials and then energy. Packaging choices are also becoming more important. The objective is to preserve the product as well as possible with a minimum environmental impact. The ‘packaging’ topic is being developed in a separate roadmap.

Expected results

  • By-products from the agri-food industry will facilitate the development of food products and animal feed
  • New technologies make viable by-products possible
  • New business models for by-products
  • Optimising water consumption
