Ohlive: OLEochemical Valorisation of Butterfat into High-Value Food Ingredients
With the support of:

Ohlive is a feasibility study investigating the technical, logistical, economic and commercial feasibility of a new generation of plant-based spreadable fat products. The study aims to identify key risks, uncertainties and opportunities to support future product development and scale-up.
Why this project?
The demand for plant-based food products continues to grow. Consumers increasingly expect not only excellent taste and eating experience, but also products with a natural, clean-label positioning. In addition, scientific evidence suggests that replacing saturated fats with plant-based oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids may contribute to a more favourable cardiovascular risk profile. High-quality plant-based fat products can therefore play a valuable role in a healthy and balanced diet.
This VLAIO feasibility study investigates the technical, logistical and economic feasibility of a new generation of plant-based spreadable fat products. The aim of the study is to identify the key risks and uncertainties before further investments in product development and scale-up are considered.
Research approach and expected results
The feasibility study includes several analyses focusing on product stability, shelf life, reproducibility, and suitability for larger-scale production. In addition, packaging and logistical requirements will be evaluated to determine how a high-quality and stable product can be delivered to both consumers and professional users.
The study will also assess potential applications in retail, food service, gastronomy and bakery products, as well as how the product can be positioned within the existing regulatory framework.
By the end of the study, the main technical and economic risks and opportunities are expected to be clearly identified, providing a solid basis for decision-making regarding the further development, scale-up and market introduction of the concept.
Target group
The results of the Ohlive project are relevant for:
- Companies active in retail, food service, gastronomy and bakery sectors that are interested in healthy plant-based alternatives.
- Food companies marketing plant-based spreadable fat products.
- Producers of ingredients and oils looking for new application opportunities
- Consumers seeking high-quality, flavourful and plant-based food products with a clean-label profile.
